Arachnophobia and the Desert Tarantula

Arachnophobia is defined as the irrational fear of arachnids, especially spiders. There are over 100 million people in the United States who suffer from this phobia. Of all the spiders in the world, tarantulas are one of the most recognizable. Because they are so large and weird-looking,  most people are afraid of them but  they are not really dangerous to humans. The largest type of spider in the world is the Desert Tarantula.  These tarantulas spend most of their lives underground in burrows lined with silk webbing. The webbing helps to strengthen the burrow and prevent cave ins.

Skilled nocturnal hunters, they wait by the entrance of their burrow at nihgt for insects and other small animals to wander too close. They feed primarily on insects like grasshoppers, beetles, other small spiders and sometimes even a lizard. If you want to observe these creatures, mating season is when tey are most active. Males leave their burrows and search for the burrows of adult females. Males live to be 10 or 11 years old, and they die after mating. Females can live 25 years or more. They can mate and lay eggs several times during their lives. To an arachnophobic these facts might be disturbing, but if one can move past fear, these fascinating details can be fascinating.
